Havanda Döner in Frankfurt – A Taste of Home for Turkish Expats

Havanda Döner

As Turkish expats, many of us who have enjoyed real döner in Istanbul often struggle to find that same authentic taste in Germany. Unfortunately, most döner here is produced in large industrial facilities, using frozen, mid- to low-quality meat. In many cases, you can clearly notice mixtures like turkey being used, which significantly affects both texture and flavor.

Recently, due to increasing demand, many places have started offering “beef döner.” However, döner is not just about the type of meat — it’s a craft. Proper meat selection, marination, layering, and slicing all require real expertise. Sadly, many of these newer beef döner spots lack that know-how, resulting in dry meat with uneven fat distribution and a rather odd texture. These are places I generally wouldn’t recommend.

That said, today I want to talk about a place in Frankfurt that stands out: Havanda Döner.

Located centrally at Hauptwache, Havanda Döner follows more of a fast-food concept, but don’t let that fool you. It’s a solid spot for good döner. It’s clear they have skilled people behind the counter — their döner reflects a more authentic Turkish recipe, especially in terms of fat balance and marination. They also offer it in different serving styles, and paired with a classic ayran, it makes for a very satisfying meal.

Their chicken döner is also quite good — well-marinated, tender, and importantly, not overcooked or dry. It’s filling and flavorful, which is not always easy to find.

They also serve lahmacun and pide. I haven’t personally tried them yet, but visually they look quite close to the originals you’d find in Turkey.

If you’re in central Frankfurt and craving something that feels closer to the real Turkish döner experience, Havanda Döner is definitely worth a visit. Of course, it’s not a full-service restaurant, and since the business is still relatively new, you might notice some minor imperfections. But then again, who starts out as an expert?

If you happen to be nearby, I’d say give it a try.
